Charges Against Credit Union Manager
A 63-year-old Belle Vernon woman has been charged with embezzling over $340,000 from her employer, a federal credit union in western Pennsylvania. Patty Lynn Mavrakis, the Branch Manager of Valley 1st Community Federal Credit Union, allegedly stole $340,200 in September 2016 and then set fire to the safe to conceal the theft.
According to the indictment, Mavrakis made an insurance claim on behalf of the credit union for the missing currency in the days following the fire. The indictment charges her with embezzlement, wire fraud, and use of fire to commit a federal felony.
An assistant United States attorney is prosecuting the case, which was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Mavrakis has been released on a $50,000 unsecured bond.
She faces a maximum total sentence of 60 years in prison, a fine of $1.5 million, or both. The actual sentence will depend on the seriousness of the offenses and Mavrakis’ prior criminal history, if any.
Mavrakis is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The indictment is merely an accusation, and the defendant’s guilt must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case is a stark reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency in financial institutions. Credit unions and banks rely on their employees to manage finances honestly and responsibly.
The indictment serves as a warning to anyone considering similar crimes. The consequences of embezzlement and arson are severe, and the public expects those in positions of trust to act with integrity.
