WASHINGTON D.C. – Another D.C. street thug caught with heat. Guy Cummings, 29, of the District, was found guilty yesterday of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm after a three-day federal trial. This isn’t Cummings’ first rodeo; he’s a repeat offender who clearly doesn’t respect the law or the safety of others.
The jury delivered the verdict in U.S. District Court, finding Cummings guilty on the single-count indictment. He’s facing serious consequences for unlawfully possessing a firearm, given his prior criminal record. Chief Judge James E. Boasberg has set sentencing for November 3, 2025 – a date Cummings will likely spend reflecting on his poor choices.
According to court documents, the bust went down on January 18, 2025, around 1:30 a.m. Metropolitan Police Department officers were patrolling the 300 block of 50th Street NE in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood when they spotted a group on the sidewalk. Cummings, recognizing the police, immediately bolted. Officers gave chase, tracking him through the snow.
The chase didn’t last long. An officer witnessed Cummings toss something over a brick wall before being apprehended. Turns out, that “something” was a loaded Glock 26 9mm pistol – reported stolen, naturally. To add insult to injury, Cummings was already under a court order to stay away from the area and had a five-year barring notice from the DC Housing Authority Police Department stemming from a previous pistol-packing arrest.
This wasn’t a first-time offense for Cummings. Back in 2017, he was handed a 36-month prison sentence for robbery and carrying a dangerous weapon. That conviction should have been enough to keep him from touching a firearm ever again, but clearly, some people never learn. This case is part of the “Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful” initiative, a law enforcement push backing President Trump’s Executive Order to clean up the nation’s capital.
The investigation was a joint effort by the Metropolitan Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Washington Field Division, with assistance from the FBI Washington Field Office. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sarah Martin, Benjamin Helfand, and Jared English are prosecuting the case. Case number: 25cr44. Expect a hefty sentence for Cummings – and hopefully, a longer stay behind bars this time.
