Georgetown Law Professor Shon Hopwood, 50, from Washington DC, has been found guilty by a Superior Court jury on charges of assault, contempt, and obstruction of justice. The verdict comes after a trial that exposed a pattern of domestic abuse and deceit.
Hopwood was accused of repeatedly assaulting his wife, including an incident where he physically threw her out of their bedroom. He also coached their children to lie about her whereabouts following the assault. Authorities discovered Hopwood’s history of chronic emotional and physical abuse, which dates back several years.
The jury found Hopwood guilty of three counts of simple assault, five counts of contempt, and two counts of obstructing justice. Sentencing has been scheduled for September 18, 2025. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro emphasized the jury’s demand for accountability in this case, noting that the jury was not deterred by the defendant’s status as a professor.
Further investigation revealed that Hopwood had been violating court orders and pressuring his wife not to cooperate with law enforcement. He even orchestrated a scheme to keep her and their children out of jurisdiction on the trial date to get the case dismissed. This led to additional charges against him, including five counts of contempt and two counts of obstruction of justice.
Joining the announcement was Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department. The case was investigated by MPD with assistance from the United States Marshal Service and prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Monisha Rao and Katherine Ballou handled the prosecution.
Hopwood had previously been charged and convicted for assaulting his wife in April 2023, adding to the gravity of his latest convictions.
