Anthony McNair, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, District of Columbia 2025

WASHINGTON D.C. – Anthony McNair, 36, of Washington, D.C., has added to his already substantial prison sentence. The Brinks armored car robbery defendant was sentenced today to 42 months for savagely stabbing another inmate at the DC Central Detention Facility, a grim addition to his 31.5 year term for armed robbery. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced the sentencing, stemming from an October 11, 2024 attack.

The incident, captured on surveillance footage, shows McNair repeatedly stabbing 28-year-old Tyjuan McNeal in the Southwest 2 housing unit around 11:00 a.m. The attack appears unprovoked. McNair used a sharpened object, methodically stabbing McNeal across his head, neck, shoulder, chest, and palm. Disturbingly, the footage reveals McNair even pulled a shirt over McNeal’s face, blinding him and preventing any defense. A correctional officer finally intervened, halting the brutal assault.

McNeal was rushed to a local hospital by ambulance, suffering multiple stab wounds. Meanwhile, McNair was already awaiting sentencing for his role in a string of brazen Brinks armored car robberies that plagued Washington, D.C. in late 2021 and early 2022. The crew managed to siphon off approximately $1.2 million before being caught.

On March 26, 2025, U.S. District Court Judge Royce Lamberth handed down the 31.5 year sentence for the robberies. McNair’s co-defendants fared no better: William Brock received 54.7 years, and Erin Sheffey was sentenced to 18 years. The Superior Court of the District of Columbia, with The Honorable Judith Pipe presiding, ordered the additional 42-month sentence for the jail stabbing on July 28, 2025, after McNair pleaded guilty to one count of assault with a dangerous weapon on January 27, 2025.

This latest sentence will run consecutively with his existing 31.5 year sentence, meaning McNair will spend even more time behind bars. Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department joined U.S. Attorney Pirro in announcing the sentencing, praising the work of investigators from the MPD. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ariel Lieberman prosecuted the case. The DC jail, already notorious for overcrowding and violence, adds another layer of brutality to McNair’s already extensive criminal record.

This case underscores the ongoing challenges of maintaining security within correctional facilities, and the continued threat posed by violent criminals even while incarcerated. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the escalating violence within the DC jail system.
