Rashad Ervin, Armed Robbery, District of Columbia 2024

WASHINGTON – A terrifying wave of armed robberies on Capitol Hill has met its match as Rashad Ervin, 17, Markell Butler, 16, and Dereon Butler, 17, all from Washington, D.C., have been arrested and charged as adults for their roles in the spree. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced the charges, which include multiple counts of armed robbery and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.

According to government evidence, on December 2, 2024, the trio, using stolen vehicles, targeted unsuspecting pedestrians early in the morning. They approached ten different victims across various locations, brandishing firearms or imitations, and made off with their wallets, purses, cellphones, and other belongings before fleeing each scene.

Rashad Ervin was nabbed on May 13, 2025; Markell Butler was taken into custody on June 23, 2025; and Dereon Butler was arrested on July 22, 2025. All are currently in police custody. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) played a significant role in the arrests.

Joining Pirro at the announcement was Chief Pamela Smith of the MPD. This case is under investigation by the MPD and being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Levy.

The charges against them are serious, but it’s important to note that a complaint is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of these events, the swift action by authorities has provided some measure of relief. The public remains vigilant for further developments in this case.
