WASHINGTON D.C. – Sixteen-year-old Steffen Brathwaite was gunned down in cold blood on the 3000 block of 24th Place, SE, in September 2019. Today, his killer, Bernard Eddy, 24, of the District of Columbia, finally faces justice – but many will argue it’s not enough. Eddy was sentenced to 25 years in prison by the Honorable Michael Ryan, a sentence far short of the 31 years requested by prosecutors.
The Superior Court jury delivered a guilty verdict on April 22, 2025, finding Eddy responsible for second-degree murder while armed, along with a slew of related weapons offenses. The details of the crime are chilling. According to evidence presented at trial, Eddy simply approached Steffen as the boy walked home alone and unleashed a barrage of gunfire from a 9mm handgun. Steffen never stood a chance.
What truly twists the knife is the evidence recovered from Eddy’s own cell phone. Eight days after the shooting, investigators seized the device and uncovered a 15-second video. In it, Eddy is seen celebrating Steffen’s murder. A callous display of depravity that painted a disturbing picture of the defendant’s mindset. This wasn’t a crime of passion; it was a calculated act of violence followed by gleeful disregard for human life.
Eddy remained at large for over three years, finally being arrested on January 6, 2023. He’s been held without bail ever since. While a conviction has been secured, the relatively lenient sentence is sure to ignite outrage amongst those who demand stricter penalties for violent offenders. The U.S. Attorney’s office, led by Jeanine Ferris Pirro, argued for a 31-year term, believing it more appropriately reflected the severity of the crime and the defendant’s brazen behavior.
The Metropolitan Police Department conducted the painstaking investigation that led to Eddy’s capture and conviction. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael Liebman and Mark Levy skillfully prosecuted the case, presenting the damning evidence to the jury. However, the question remains: will 25 years be enough to keep this dangerous individual off the streets and prevent future tragedies? The Brathwaite family deserves closure, but justice, in this instance, feels incomplete.
Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the impact of violent crime in the nation’s capital. The cycle of violence must be broken, and accountability – true accountability – is a critical step. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in our neighborhoods and the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to address the root causes of crime.
