Convicted Felon in Possession of Firearm Lands 54 Months in Prison
A Crown Point man has been sentenced to 54 months in prison for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Daeshawn Jones, 29 years old, was handed down the sentence by United States District Court Judge Philip P. Simon after pleading guilty to the crime.
According to documents in the case, law enforcement conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in Merrillville, Indiana, on October 8, 2023. During a search of the vehicle, a loaded semi-automatic pistol with an obliterated serial number was discovered from the rear driver’s side seat. Jones attempted to flee but was apprehended.
Jones has a prior 2022 Illinois felony conviction for attempted criminal sexual assault/force and a 2021 Indiana felony conviction for forgery. As a result, he is prohibited from possessing the firearm.
This case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives Indiana High Intensity Drug Trafficking Task Force and the Merrillville Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Kristian R. Mukoski prosecuted the case.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The program brings together law enforcement and the communities they serve to make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
In this case, Jones was sentenced to 54 months in prison followed by 24 months of supervised release. The sentence is a result of his guilty plea to the crime of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
Jones’s history of convictions and his possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number demonstrate a clear disregard for the law and a willingness to engage in violent activity. The sentence handed down by Judge Simon is a necessary step in holding individuals accountable for their actions and making our communities safer.
