Dallas Robinson, Gun Possession, Tampa FL, 2022
TAMPA, FL – Just four months after walking out of federal prison, Dallas Robinson, Jr., 29, of Tampa, is facing up to a decade behind bars after pleading guilty to possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The arrest unfolded last December, revealing a pattern of disregard for the law and a brazen willingness to arm himself despite a recent federal conviction.
The bust went down in Tampa’s River Grove neighborhood, near the intersection of East Sligh Avenue and Rowlett Park Drive. Robinson was riding as a passenger in a stolen vehicle, driven by another convicted felon. Both men were packing heat – fully loaded, semi-automatic pistols. When police attempted a traffic stop, both Robinson and the driver bailed from the stolen car, leaving the weapons behind.
Officers quickly secured the scene. A search of the vehicle revealed a loaded black SCCY CPX-1 9mm pistol on the driver’s seat and a loaded black Springfield XDS (HS Product) .45 caliber pistol in the passenger-side footwell. Crucially, latent fingerprints lifted from the .45 matched Robinson. His wallet and Florida ID were also found on the passenger seat, right next to the gun bearing his prints – a damning piece of evidence.
This wasn’t Robinson’s first brush with federal law. He’d previously served 30 months in federal prison on convictions related to the National Firearms Act. His release in August 2021 barely gave him time to adjust to life outside before he was allegedly back to his old ways, now facing a potentially lengthy return trip. The .45 caliber pistol and its ammunition are subject to forfeiture.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Tampa Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant United States Attorney David W.A. Chee is prosecuting the case. This case is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide initiative focused on reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement and communities.
A sentencing date for Dallas Robinson, Jr. has not yet been set. He faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison. The outcome will likely send a message to other convicted felons considering illegally possessing firearms in the Tampa area – the feds are watching, and they’re prepared to act.
