Weathersfield, Vermont Man Sentenced for Social Security Fraud
On June 10, 2024, Daniel Chase, 61, of Weathersfield, Vermont was sentenced to one year of probation following his guilty plea to a charge of making false statements to the Social Security Administration.
According to court documents, Chase had made repeated false claims to the SSA that he was his deceased spouse, claiming to be alive, and that the payments had been wrongly terminated.
After his spouse passed away in June 2020, Chase submitted forged documents to the SSA to prove that his spouse was still alive.
The SSA stopped the monthly payment of approximately $867 to Chase’s spouse after learning of their passing. In an effort to get the payments reinstated, Chase made the false claims and submitted the forged documents.
Chase will also have to pay $2602 in restitution, as ordered by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Geoffrey W. Crawford.
The case was investigated by the SSA’s Office of Inspector General and Vermont’s Department of Children and Families.

Chase’s actions led to a federal grand jury in Burlington returning an indictment in May 2021, charging him with three counts of making false statements to the SSA.
