Heroin Trafficking Lands Warsaw Man in Prison for 20 Years

A 26-year-old man from Warsaw, Indiana, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in a heroin trafficking operation. Darin Devon Hurd, 26, of Warsaw, Indiana, was sentenced to 248 months in prison followed by 6 years of supervised release for possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and possession with intent to distribute heroin.

The sentence was handed down in the South Bend District Court by Judge Robert L. Miller, Jr. on an unspecified date. According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, Hurd began dealing heroin in January 2017 and distributed approximately 50 grams of heroin every two weeks for the next eight months.

However, his operation came to an end in September 2017, when the mother of his child passed away from a heroin overdose while home with their toddler son, who subsequently tested positive for heroin metabolite. A firearm was found during the investigation at Hurd’s home.

U.S. Attorney Kirsch released a statement condemning Hurd’s actions, stating that heroin overdoses are an epidemic in the country and that Hurd’s conduct contributed to the premature death of the mother of his child.

The case was investigated by the ATF with the assistance of the Winona Lake Police Department, Warsaw Police Department, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana State Police, and the Kosciusko County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Molly E. Donnelly handled the case.
