A St. Paul man has been convicted of illegally possessing a firearm, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Darnell Andre Dunn, 30, was found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm, specifically an armed career criminal.
The conviction stems from a drive-by shooting that took place on August 30, 2019, in St. Paul. A car driven by Dunn and two others was involved in the shooting. After the incident, the police pulled over the car, but Dunn and the others were able to escape. The next day, police spotted Dunn at a gas station and after questioning him, found a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson on the floor of the car.
The weapon was later linked to the drive-by shooting through ballistics analysis. Dunn’s prior felony convictions prohibit him from possessing firearms or ammunition at any time. He now faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years, up to life imprisonment, a maximum fine of $250,000, and up to three years of supervised release.
The case was the result of an investigation conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the St. Paul Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Harry M. Jacobs and Melinda A. Williams prosecuted the case.
Dunn’s sentencing date has yet to be scheduled. A federal district court judge will determine the sentence after taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
