Richard Alonzo Woods, a 29-year-old St. Paul felon, has been sentenced to 77 months in prison for possessing a .357-caliber revolver, according to a federal court ruling in Minnesota.
United States District Court Judge Susan Richard Nelson handed down the sentence on a single count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Woods was indicted on May 15, 2012, and pleaded guilty on July 27, 2012.
According to court documents, Woods admitted to possessing the Smith & Wesson revolver on November 16, 2011. As a felon, Woods is prohibited under federal law from possessing a firearm at any time.
Woods’ prior convictions include third-degree sale of controlled substances in 2002 and 2003, check forgery in 2003, fifth-degree possession of controlled substances in 2006, and possession of a firearm by an ineligible person in 2006 – all in Ramsey County.
The case was the result of an investigation by the St. Paul Police and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Julie E. Allyn and Surya Saxena.
The guilty plea and subsequent sentencing mark a significant blow to Woods, who will now face the consequences of his actions. As the case comes to a close, the community can rest a little easier knowing that justice has been served.
