Darryl B. Stewart, 49, Pleads Guilty to Theft of Federal Funds
A former Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office officer has pleaded guilty to stealing federal funds, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced today. Darryl B. Stewart, 49, of Houma, entered the plea in U.S. District Court to one count of theft of government funds.
According to court records, Stewart was the Narcotics Unit Supervisor for the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office during a time period when the department applied for and received two separate federal grants from the government. The grants, totaling $15,925, were for personnel overtime and equipment to support a Multi-Jurisdictional Narcotics Task Force.
As part of his guilty plea, Stewart admitted to claiming and approving his own overtime from the grants from 2009 through 2012. An investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation revealed that Stewart had claimed federal overtime hours during times when he was working private security details. In other instances, Stewart claimed federal overtime hours without participating in narcotics enforcement work.
Stewart, who resigned from the TPSO on April 12, 2016, faces a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, up to $250,000 in fines, and up to 3 years of supervised release. U.S. District Judge Ivan L.R. Lemelle set sentencing for September 7, 2016.
U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite praised the work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for handling the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward J. Rivera is in charge of the prosecution.
The investigation into Stewart’s activities was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Stewart’s guilty plea marks the culmination of an investigation that exposed a pattern of abuse of federal funds. The case serves as a reminder that those who abuse government funds will be held accountable.
