RICHMOND, Va. — In a chilling turn of events, Darryl Nathaniel Cole, 59, has pleaded guilty to armed robbery after pointing a firearm at a clerk during a heist at a local 7-Eleven.
\\
Cole’s crime spree began on July 3, 2023, when he attempted to buy tobacco products using his own card, which had insufficient funds. Upon the entrance of another customer, Cole fled and returned with a handgun, demanding cash from the store clerk.
\\
When the clerk attempted to escape, Cole fired a shot in her direction, narrowly missing her, and fled with the money. The weapon discharged struck a nearby coffeemaker, leaving a terrifying aftermath.
\\
Scheduled for sentencing on Sept. 26, Cole faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years and up to life in prison. Despite federal guidelines often resulting in less severe sentences than the maximum penalties, this violent act could carry the harshest consequences.
\\
The joint announcement was made by Jessica D. Aber, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia; Jason Miyares, Attorney General of Virginia; and senior law enforcement officials, highlighting the severity of the crime and the community’s need for justice.
\\
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ellen Hubbard and Olivia L. Norman are prosecuting the case, ensuring that Cole will face the full weight of the law.
