New York Man Sentenced to 72 Months for Fentanyl Trafficking

A New York man was sentenced to 72 months in federal prison for his role in a fentanyl trafficking operation.

Darvent Cummings, 31, of Brooklyn, New York, was sentenced on September 30, 2020 for possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, United States Attorney Jane E. Young announced today.

The case began when a New Hampshire State Trooper stopped a vehicle in which Cummings was a passenger based on a traffic violation. The driver of the vehicle did not have a license and the driver and the defendant gave inconsistent stories about their travel itineraries.

The driver was asked if there was anything illegal in the car and then started to cry. The driver eventually told the trooper that there were drugs in the car. A search of the car revealed two small bricks wrapped in duct tape, which later tested positive for more than 500 grams of fentanyl.

The case was investigated by the New Hampshire State Police with assistance from the Drug Enforcement Administration. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Seth R. Aframe and John J. Kennedy.

Cummings was sentenced to 72 months in federal prison for his crime. The defendant was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped by a New Hampshire State Trooper for a traffic violation.

The defendant’s crime involved more than 500 grams of fentanyl, a powerful opioid that has been linked to a number of overdose deaths in recent years.
