Datreon Adams, Discharging a Firearm, Iowa 2024

A convicted felon who discharged a firearm in a residential neighborhood in Dubuque, Iowa, was sentenced to three years in federal prison.

Datreon Adams, age 30, from Dubuque, Iowa, received the prison term after a September 19, 2024, guilty plea to possession of a firearm by a felon. At the plea and sentencing hearings, Adams admitted to unlawfully possessing a firearm.

Information at those hearings showed that Adams drove through a Dubuque neighborhood discharging the firearm before returning to his motel. Officers subsequently located the firearm in Adams’ motel room and determined he was a felon. Adams did not strike anyone or anything while discharging the firearm.

Adams was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand. Adams was sentenced to 36 months’ imprisonment. He must also serve a two-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence.

Adams is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Michael S.A. Hudson and investigated by the Dubuque Police Department, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
