David L. Brinson, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, New York 2023

WATERLOO, NY – David L. Brinson, 60, is facing a potential 15-year prison sentence after admitting to possessing a firearm despite a lengthy rap sheet. Brinson pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge David G. Larimer to the charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The feds aren’t playing around with repeat offenders.

The bust went down September 14, 2022, when New York State Parole Officers paid a routine visit to Brinson’s residence on Seneca Boulevard. It wasn’t a social call. Inside Brinson’s bedroom, they discovered a .22 caliber rifle. A simple home visit turned into a federal case.

Brinson’s criminal history isn’t short. Court records show prior felony convictions in 2000, 2006, and 2016. Each conviction legally barred him from owning a firearm. He apparently didn’t get the memo, or thought he could get away with it. He was wrong.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Katelyn M. Hartford is prosecuting the case, and she’s seeking the maximum penalty. A $250,000 fine is also on the table. The investigation was a joint effort between the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

ATF Special Agent-in-Charge John B. DeVito and Acting Commissioner Anthony J. Annucci of the Department of Corrections oversaw the investigation. They’re sending a clear message: illegally possessing a firearm after a felony conviction will be met with swift and severe consequences.

Brinson is scheduled to be sentenced on May 18, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. before Judge Larimer. Whether he’ll be spending the next decade and a half behind bars remains to be seen, but the odds aren’t looking good for the Waterloo man. Grimy Times will be in the courtroom.
