ROTTERDAM, NY – Cameron Robinson, 25, of Grover, North Carolina, will spend the next 27 months behind bars after being sentenced today for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The case, investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Rotterdam Police Department, highlights the ongoing struggle to keep guns out of the hands of those legally prohibited from owning them.
The incident unfolded on May 4, 2022, when Robinson himself was shot with a Taurus Model G2C 9mm semi-automatic pistol in Rotterdam. Ironically, the same weapon became the source of his federal charges. Authorities quickly discovered Robinson was no stranger to the law, already carrying a felony conviction for Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury from North Carolina. He was, in fact, on parole for that offense at the time of the shooting and subsequent gun possession charge.
According to court documents, Robinson admitted to possessing the Taurus pistol. This admission sealed his fate, as federal law clearly prohibits convicted felons from owning firearms. The fact that Robinson was already under supervision for a violent crime only compounded the severity of the offense. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York, led by Carla B. Freedman, aggressively pursued the case, securing the 27-month sentence.
“This case underscores our commitment to prosecuting individuals who illegally possess firearms, especially those with prior criminal histories,” stated U.S. Attorney Freedman in a released statement. John B. DeVito, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF’s New York Field Division, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the collaborative effort between federal and local law enforcement. Rotterdam Police Chief Michael S. Brown also contributed to the announcement.
The prosecution of Robinson falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The program focuses on building trust with communities, supporting local organizations, and implementing strategic enforcement priorities. The Biden administration recently relaunched a strengthened version of PSN, hoping to address the rising tide of gun violence across the nation.
While the 27-month sentence provides a measure of justice in this case, it remains to be seen whether it will be enough to deter others from similar criminal behavior. The Grimy Times will continue to monitor federal prosecutions like this one, exposing the underbelly of crime and holding offenders accountable. Robinson’s case serves as a stark reminder: a criminal record doesn’t erase the potential for violence, and illegally possessing a firearm carries serious consequences.
