David Luke Cunningham Sentenced to 20 Years for Child Exploitation Offenses

An investigation led by the Pennsylvania State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation has resulted in a harsh sentence for a Washington County man accused of sharing videos depicting the sexual exploitation of children.

David Luke Cunningham, 42, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on his conviction of receipt and distribution of material depicting the sexual exploitation of a minor, United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today.

United States District Judge Cathy Bissoon imposed the sentence on Cunningham, emphasizing that his actions spoke louder than his words. Despite denials of a sexual interest in children, Cunningham’s criminal conduct formed the basis for his state and federal convictions for sexual crimes against children.

The case against Cunningham began in 2007 when the Pennsylvania State Police detected him sharing videos depicting the sexual exploitation of children as part of an undercover online investigation of peer-to-peer networks. More than 50 videos, including sadomasochistic images and violent sexual assault of children appearing as young as two years of age, were later recovered from Cunningham’s computer following a search warrant.

At the time of the investigation, Cunningham was on probation for a sexual offense involving a 4-year-old child in Washington County. Evidence presented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Soo C. Song at sentencing revealed that Cunningham’s criminal record and online activity made him a prime suspect in the child exploitation case.

U.S. Attorney Hickton commended the Pennsylvania State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for their work in investigating and prosecuting the case. Assistant United States Attorneys Soo C. Song and Jessica Leiber Smolar prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.

Cunningham’s sentence serves as a reminder of the severity of child exploitation crimes and the importance of continued efforts to combat these offenses. The case highlights the need for vigilance and cooperation among law enforcement agencies, as well as the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
