A shocking case of sex abuse has come to light in North Carolina, where a 56-year-old man has been sentenced to four years and three months in prison for his heinous crimes.
David Paul George Sr., an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, was found guilty of sexually abusing a minor female in his care between March and May 2018. The abuse took place in Swain County, within the boundaries of the Indian reservation.
According to court documents, George admitted to sexually abusing the victim on multiple occasions. The extent of his crimes has left the community reeling, with many calling for harsher punishments for those who prey on the vulnerable.
Chief Doug Pheasant of the Cherokee Indian Police Department praised the U.S. Attorney’s Office for their diligent work in bringing George to justice. ‘This sentence is a testament to the tireless efforts of our investigators and prosecutors,’ Pheasant said.
U.S. Attorney Andrew Murray thanked the Cherokee Indian Police Department for their investigation, saying, ‘We are committed to holding perpetrators of sex abuse accountable for their crimes.’
Assistant U.S. Attorney John Pritchard prosecuted the case, which has been a long time coming for the victim and her family. George has been in federal custody since June 2019 and will be transferred to the custody of the federal Bureau of Prisons upon designation of a federal facility.
As part of his sentence, George will serve 15 years under court supervision and register as a sex offender after his release from prison. All federal sentences are served without the possibility of parole.
