Daycare Director Sentenced in Laredo Cocaine Ring

LAREDO, Texas – In a chilling case of drug-related corruption, Cynthia Elizabeth Arellano, a 34-year-old daycare director from Laredo, has been sentenced for her involvement in a large-scale cocaine trafficking conspiracy.

Arellano pleaded guilty on August 13, 2024, to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine. U.S. District Judge Keith P. Ellison imposed a 45-month-term of imprisonment, followed by four years of supervised release. The court heard harrowing details of Arellano using her own home as a stash house for approximately 245 kilograms of cocaine and $428,411 in drug proceeds.

U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei commented on the case, ‘The idea of using your home where your three-year-old daughter lives as a stash house is incredibly dangerous.’ He emphasized that the defendant’s role in the conspiracy indicated she was a trusted member with a long history of drug transactions.

Arellano’s downfall began in April 2024 when Cristian Jareth Flores arranged the sale of one kilogram of cocaine for $14,000. The investigation revealed Juan Antonio Ochoa-Saucedo had previously picked up drugs from her residence. A search warrant executed at Arellano’s home uncovered two money counters and drug ledgers, indicating an extensive cocaine trafficking operation involving hundreds of thousands of dollars.

At the time of her plea, Arellano admitted to committing the crime due to financial necessity. Flores and Ochoa-Saucedo have also pleaded guilty and been sentenced to 36 and 57 months in prison respectively. Arellano was allowed to remain on bond until surrendering to a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility.

The DEA-led Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) conducted the operation with the assistance of the Laredo Police Department. Additional information about OCDETF can be found on the Department of Justice’s webpage.
