A New Orleans man has been sentenced to 144 months in prison for his role in a methamphetamine distribution scheme. Dayshawn Brown, 40, was found guilty of distributing 50 or more grams of methamphetamine and being a felon in possession of a firearm. According to court documents, Brown met with an undercover agent at a gas station in New Orleans to sell narcotics and a firearm. During the transaction, Brown sold the agent a Beretta Pietro S.P.A. Model 70S, .380 caliber pistol with an obliterated serial number, and approximately 54 grams of methamphetamine.
The arrest was made as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. The program brings together law enforcement agencies and community organizations to make neighborhoods safer for everyone. Brown’s sentence was handed down by United States District Judge Carl J. Barbier on August 28, 2025.
Brown was also ordered to serve four years of supervised release upon his release from prison and pay a mandatory special assessment fee of $200. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Troy Bell of the Violent Crime Unit.
Acting United States Attorney Michael M. Simpson praised the work of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the New Orleans Police Department in bringing Brown to justice. The case is a prime example of the success of Project Safe Neighborhoods in reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities.
According to the PSN strategy, the program aims to foster trust and legitimacy in communities, support community-based organizations, set focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measure the results. The strategy was launched by the Justice Department on May 26, 2021. The New Orleans Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives worked together to bring Brown to justice.
The sentence handed down to Brown is a significant blow to the methamphetamine trade in New Orleans. The case serves as a warning to those involved in similar activities that they will be caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
