In a shocking display of violence, Dequan Simpson, 18, allegedly lured a pizza delivery driver and a freelance barber to a residence on Webster Street NE in Washington DC, robbing and carjacking them at gunpoint. The crimes occurred on March 4 and 6, with the second incident leaving the barber shot multiple times. Simpson was charged with 13 counts of armed carjacking, robbery, and assault.
The investigation led police to spot the stolen 2009 Infiniti G37X on March 9, occupied by several people, speeding on Florida Ave NE. A high-speed pursuit ensued, during which an occupant appeared to throw a rifle from the vehicle. Simpson was later apprehended and held without bond by Magistrate Judge Moxila A. Upadhyaya on April 1.
Dequan Simpson faces multiple counts of Carjacking, Interfering with Interstate Commerce by Robbery, and Using a Firearm During a Crime of Violence. Jayvaun Brown, 20, was also named in three counts, including Interstate Transportation of a Stolen Vehicle and Fleeing a Law Enforcement Officer. Brown is scheduled to appear in court on April 2.
The case highlights the growing concern of violent crime in Washington DC, with the US Attorney’s office and law enforcement agencies working together to bring perpetrators to justice. The indictment serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of such crimes, with Simpson facing a lengthy prison sentence if convicted.
