WASHINGTON D.C. – A brazen daylight shooting in Northwest D.C. landed 21-year-old Travone Henderson of Washington D.C. a seven-year federal prison sentence. Henderson was sentenced today for the November 13, 2023, shooting near the DC USA shopping center in Columbia Heights, a case that sent ripples through the neighborhood.
According to court documents and statements from U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith, Henderson walked past a man and his companion on 14th Street Northwest around 12:30 p.m. Without warning, he turned and aggressively approached the pair, brandishing a firearm. The intended victim immediately attempted to flee, and Henderson then tried to physically impede the companion, clearly intent on pursuing his target.
The situation escalated rapidly as Henderson opened fire, discharging multiple rounds at the fleeing man. Sadly, the victim and a completely innocent bystander were both struck by gunfire, each sustaining bullet wounds to the legs. Henderson didn’t hesitate, immediately taking off on foot, leaving a trail of chaos and injured individuals in his wake. The scene quickly became a frantic scramble for help, with paramedics rushing to provide aid.
Henderson ultimately pleaded guilty on February 28, 2024, to charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. Superior Court Judge Jason Park delivered the sentence today: seven years of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release. While a significant penalty, it remains to be seen if it will truly deter others from engaging in similar acts of senseless violence on D.C. streets.
Federal prosecutors highlighted the importance of this case, emphasizing the need to hold individuals accountable for gun violence that plagues the city. Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Carlton, who led the prosecution, built a solid case based on evidence that Henderson admitted to. Both U.S. Attorney Graves and Chief Smith praised the diligent work of the Metropolitan Police Department investigators and the team from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the constant threat of gun violence in the nation’s capital. While the seven-year sentence offers some measure of justice for the victims, the Grimy Times will continue to follow the story and report on the ongoing struggle to curb violent crime in Washington D.C. and beyond. The question remains: will this be enough to make a real difference on the streets?
