WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Metropolitan Branch Trail isn’t the safe passage it’s cracked up to be. Jalique Wiseman, 19, of Washington, D.C., is facing a mountain of charges after being indicted yesterday on twenty-four counts connected to a brazen string of robberies that terrorized trail users last fall. U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Pamela Smith announced the indictment, a culmination of weeks of investigation into the escalating violence.
The Superior Court grand jury slapped Wiseman with charges including robbery, armed robbery, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, assault with a dangerous weapon, and even credit card fraud. Authorities allege that between October 2, 2023, and November 23, 2023, Wiseman – along with at least one accomplice – systematically preyed on eleven unsuspecting individuals on or near the popular trail. This wasn’t just about snatching phones; it was calculated and ruthless.
According to evidence presented to the grand jury, Wiseman and his accomplice didn’t hesitate to use force or brandish firearms to subdue their victims. Phones and other valuables were the initial targets, but the scheme went further. Investigators say Wiseman aggressively demanded passcodes from the robbed individuals, then used that information to infiltrate their financial accounts, transferring funds into accounts he controlled. It’s a chilling escalation of street crime into sophisticated digital theft.
The MPD spearheaded the investigation, piecing together witness statements and forensic evidence to build a case against Wiseman. Detectives reportedly focused on patterns in the robberies – time of day, location, and method – ultimately leading them to identify Wiseman as a prime suspect. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kraig Ahalt, of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, is prosecuting the case. Wiseman is scheduled to be arraigned on June 26, 2024, before the Honorable Jennifer Di Toro.
