Deangelo Tate, Sex Trafficking, Texas 2016

A Houston man, Deangelo Tate, 27, has been sentenced to 220 months in prison for sex trafficking of a minor. Tate pleaded guilty to one count of sex trafficking of children on Dec. 16, 2016.

According to his guilty plea, between Jan. 13, 2015, and March 16, 2015, Tate posted classified advertisements on backpage.com promoting the prostitution of a 17-year-old minor female. The ads were used to lure customers to hotel rooms in Corpus Christi and Houston where the minor was forced to engage in commercial sex acts.

Tate admitted to renting hotel rooms for the purpose of prostitution, transporting the minor to these locations, collecting money from customers, and becoming physically violent when the minor did not comply with his orders. He also stated that he was aware the victim was a minor and used this knowledge to his advantage.

The FBI investigated the case with assistance from the Houston Police Department and the Corpus Christi Police Department. Trial Attorney Lauren Britsch of the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS) and Assistant U.S. Attorney Sherri L. Zack of the Southern District of Texas prosecuted the case.

U.S. District Judge Gray H. Miller of the Southern District of Texas sentenced Tate to 220 months in prison, 10 years of supervised release, and ordered him to pay $20,000 in restitution.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The program marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet and to identify and rescue victims.
