DEARBORN, MI – Hassan Chokr, 38, has been handed a 34-month sentence for illegal firearms possession following an aggressive antisemitic tirade at a Bloomfield Hills synagogue. The United States Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. and the FBI Detroit Division announced the punishment for the Dearborn man.
In December 2022, Chokr drove to the synagogue parking lot, where he shouted antisemitic profanities and threatened Jewish parents and preschoolers entering the building. After being asked to leave, Chokr took his fury to a gun store in Dearborn, where he illegally possessed a Landor Arms shotgun, Del-ton rifle, and Glock pistol.
Chokr attempted to purchase the firearms, but was caught in a lie about his criminal history. He falsely claimed no felony convictions when records showed otherwise. In the meantime, Chokr made alarming comments about using the guns for “God’s wrath.” His purchase was denied after the background check revealed the truth.
“Chokr’s sickening antisemitic threats and attempts to arm himself are a chilling example of violence against believers,” said United States Attorney Gorgon. “We will stop at nothing to combat this hatred and protect our citizens’ right to worship without fear.”
Reuben Coleman, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Detroit Field Office, echoed the sentiment: “The FBI has zero tolerance for threats to our communities and we remain committed to protecting them. We thank all agencies involved for their dedication to this case.”
This investigation was led by the FBI, with prosecution handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Frances Carlson.
