PORTLAND, Maine — A chilling encounter between Oxford man Brandon Dearborn and local police has culminated in a 20-month prison sentence. The 31-year-old faced the barrel of justice after an armed confrontation that could have ended tragically.
Dearborn was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jon D. Levy, who also ordered three years of supervised release following his prison term. The incident began in August 2022 when police responded to a 911 call reporting a man waving a firearm outside a Mexico apartment complex.
Prior to the showdown, Dearborn had been flagged for illegal gun possession due to a prior felony drug conviction. When officers approached him with orders to surrender the weapon—a Ruger .22 pistol—he escalated the situation by threatening them and raising his own firearm.
Dearborn’s actions forced police into a defensive stance, resulting in multiple shots being fired at the suspect. Miraculously, no one was injured, but the aftermath of the standoff left a trail of fear and law enforcement dedication.
The FBI and Maine State Police collaborated on the investigation that led to Dearborn’s conviction. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence across communities.
Project Safe Neighborhoods, launched in May 2021, focuses on fostering community trust, supporting prevention efforts, strategic enforcement, and measurable results. For more information on PSN, visit https://www.justice.gov/usao-me/psn.
