Local Man Pleads Guilty to Heroin Conspiracy
Toms River, NJ – In a shocking turn of events, Delovi R. Canales, a/k/a “Butter,” 48, has admitted to distributing heroin as part of a large-scale drug trafficking organization that operated in Monmouth, Ocean, and Middlesex counties.
According to court documents, from November 2013 through October 2014, Canales and other members of the organization, known as the “Cadet DTO,” conspired to sell illegal drugs, chiefly heroin, in the mentioned counties. The group used stash houses, code language, and even Haitian Creole to evade law enforcement.
The investigation, led by the DEA and the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, revealed that Canales and other members of the organization were responsible for identifying sources of heroin supply and overseeing distributors who sold, packaged, and stored the drugs.
Canales pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to distribute heroin, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine. His sentencing is scheduled for June 27, 2015.
The case is a significant blow to the local heroin trade, and law enforcement officials are hailing the guilty plea as a major victory. “This is a significant step forward in our efforts to combat heroin distribution in New Jersey,” said U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman.
