Grimy Times Exclusive: Former NYPD Sergeant Pleads Guilty in Tax Scheme
A senior union official’s scheme has been exposed, and one of its key players has taken the fall. Dennis Ostermann, a 68-year-old former sergeant with the New York City Police Department, has pleaded guilty to aiding in the preparation of a false and fraudulent U.S. income tax return.
According to court documents, Ostermann served as the controller of a union representing all current and former sergeants of the NYPD. In 2018 and 2019, he paid $150,000 from his company’s bank account to a third party on behalf of the former President of the union. He then falsified the tax returns, reporting the payment as ‘legal fees.’
Ostermann’s actions not only misrepresented the movement of funds but also lied on his taxes and betrayed the trust of his position as controller for a law enforcement union and as a return preparer. With his guilty plea, he now faces the consequences of his actions.
Ostermann is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Lorna G. Schofield on August 29, 2025. The maximum potential sentence is three years in prison.
The Office’s Public Corruption Unit, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexandra Rothman, handled the prosecution. The IRS-CI and Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation.
This case serves as a reminder that no rank or position exempts anyone from accurately reporting income and expenses on their tax returns.
