OKLAHOMA CITY – Norman’s Dustin Lance Powell, 48, has been handed a 300-month federal prison sentence for illegal possession of a firearm and methamphetamine with intent to distribute. The sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester.
In a shocking turn of events, Powell faced charges after a federal grand jury indicted him on four counts: being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute, and possession of firearms in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime. Public records show that Powell was found in March 2023 with several firearms, over 500 grams of meth, and over 40 grams of fentanyl.
Powell entered a guilty plea on November 28, 2023, admitting to the charges. On June 28, 2024, U.S. District Judge Patrick R. Wyrick sentenced him to 300 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release. Powell’s possession of ten firearms, including a Heavy Counter Assault Rifle, and his extensive criminal history were cited as factors in the sentence.
Public records also reveal several previous felony convictions, including an attempt to elude a police officer in Grady County, unlawful firearm and paraphernalia possession in Cleveland County, and malicious injury to property in Cleveland County. This case stems from an investigation by Homeland Security Investigations and the Norman Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Gridley handling the prosecution.
