Rene Vasquez-Ladino, a 53-year-old Guatemalan national, and Walter Eduardo Enriquez-Arzaga, a 29-year-old Mexican national, were sentenced in July for illegally reentering the United States after prior deportations. Both men had previously been removed from the country, with Vasquez-Ladino being deported in 2015 and Enriquez-Arzaga being deported three times between 2017 and 2024. The crimes occurred in Pennsylvania, with Vasquez-Ladino being arrested in Philadelphia and Enriquez-Arzaga’s sentence being imposed by a US District Judge in the state.
Vasquez-Ladino was sentenced to 15 months in prison and one year of supervised release for his crime, while Enriquez-Arzaga received a sentence of time served, approximately five and a half months. Both men will be removed from the United States again after completing their sentences. The cases highlight the ongoing issue of illegal reentry, with many individuals attempting to return to the US after being deported.
Vasquez-Ladino’s history of illegal reentry dates back to 2015, when he was first deported. He was encountered by the US Border Patrol in Texas later that year and charged with illegal reentry. After serving a 60-day prison sentence, he was removed from the country again. In 2019, he was arrested for driving while intoxicated in New York and failed to appear in court, leading to a bench warrant being issued for his arrest.
Enriquez-Arzaga’s history of illegal reentry is also extensive, with three prior deportations. His most recent deportation occurred in March 2024, after an encounter with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The sentences imposed on both men reflect the seriousness with which the US government views illegal reentry, and the need to prevent individuals from repeatedly attempting to enter the country after being deported.
