In a crackdown on immigration crimes, five foreign nationals were sentenced in June for illegally reentering the United States after prior deportations. The defendants, including Pichoch Herrera-Ortega and Victor Enrique Echevarria Mendez, were convicted separately in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Herrera-Ortega, a 55-year-old Dominican national, had previously been removed from the US in 2011 and 2016, while Echevarria Mendez, a 32-year-old Guatemalan national, was removed in 2013 and 2020.
Herrera-Ortega was sentenced to 46 months in prison and three years of supervised release for his latest offense, which occurred when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers encountered him outside a Philadelphia residence in July last year. He had previously been convicted of distributing heroin in the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas.
Echevarria Mendez was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison and a year of supervised release for his illegal reentry. His sentence came after he pleaded guilty in December to terroristic threats, arising from a domestic dispute in which he pushed his pregnant then-girlfriend to the ground and threatened her.
The cases highlight the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies, including ICE and the US District Court, to combat immigration crimes and ensure public safety in Pennsylvania. The defendants will be removed from the US again after completing their prison sentences.
