New York Man Distributes Child Pornography via Encrypted App

ALBANY, NEW YORK – A shocking case of child pornography distribution has come to light in Albany County. Derek Boprey, a 31-year-old resident of Ravena, New York, has admitted to distributing child pornography via an encrypted messaging application on his phone.

According to court documents, Boprey used the Wickr Me messaging application to distribute child pornography over the internet to another man, also residing in the Capital Region. The disturbing images depicted the sexual abuse of children as young as 2 years old.

As part of his guilty plea, Boprey admitted to possessing child pornography on 2 electronic devices. He was ordered into custody and faces a minimum of 5 years in prison, to be followed by post-imprisonment supervised release of at least 5 years and up to life.

Boprey would also have to register as a sex offender upon his release from prison. The case was investigated by the FBI and its Child Exploitation Task Force, which includes members of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, including the Colonie Police Department.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael Barnett with assistance from the Albany County District Attorney’s Office. This case is being prosecuted as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section.

Boprey is set to be sentenced on March 6, 2019, by United States District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino. The defendant’s sentence will be imposed by the judge based on the particular statute he is charged with violating, the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, and other factors.
