Derek Jon Paddy, Fentanyl Trafficking Conspiracy, Minnesota 2023

A devastating fentanyl trafficking ring has been busted in the northwestern Minnesota city of Bemidji. Derek Jon Paddy, 28, and Robyn Lea Lussier, 20, have been charged with conspiring to distribute the deadly opioid.

According to court documents, the duo conspired to distribute fentanyl throughout the state of Minnesota between October 2023 and November 2023. Their scheme came to an end on November 2, 2023, when they were found in possession of over 40 grams of fentanyl.

Paddy and Lussier made their initial appearances in U.S. District Court before Magistrate Judge John F. Docherty on August 2, 2024. They are both charged with one count of conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and one count of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl.

The investigation into the fentanyl trafficking ring was a joint effort between the FBI and the Red Lake Police Department.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren O. Roso is prosecuting the case.

While the indictment against Paddy and Lussier marks a significant milestone in the fight against fentanyl trafficking, it is also a stark reminder that the opioid epidemic is far from over. As the nation struggles to come to terms with the devastating consequences of this crisis, it is more important than ever that we hold those responsible accountable for their actions.

An indictment is merely an allegation, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
