A 14-month nightmare for a Fort Valley mom and her family finally came to an end with a $750,000 settlement from the Justice Department.
The Indian Oaks Apartments LTD, owned by Russell Management Services LLC, H.J. Russell & Company, and The Russell Realty LP, allegedly refused to grant a reasonable accommodation to a mother whose son had been diagnosed with a genetic disorder causing permanent mobility impairment.
The apartment complex had multiple available ground-floor units, but the owners and property managers repeatedly denied the mother’s requests, forcing her to carry her son in and out of the apartment without help from her older children.
U.S. Attorney William R. “Will” Keyes slammed the apartment complex owners, saying their actions were a clear violation of both law and decency.
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon echoed Keyes, stating that Americans with disabilities have the right to equal access to housing in the United States.
