BOSTON – A Dominican national with local ties has been hit with serious federal charges for his alleged involvement in a high-stakes cocaine distribution plot. Michel Saredi-Munoz Morta, 21, was arraigned yesterday in Boston after being charged with conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute at least 500 grams of cocaine.
According to law enforcement sources, the crime spree is believed to have begun in August 2020, when Morta conspired with associates to flood Lawrence with illicit drugs. The charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and could see Morta spending up to four decades behind bars, along with a fine of $5 million.
The grim revelations were announced by Acting United States Attorney Nathaniel R. Mendell, who was joined by Special Agent in Charge Joseph R. Bonavolonta of the FBI’s Boston Division and Inspector Ketty Larco-Ward of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. The Lawrence Police Department played a crucial role in the investigation that led to Morta’s arrest.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Samuel R. Feldman and Leah B. Foley from Mendell’s Narcotics and Money Laundering Unit are leading the prosecution against Morta, who is now facing a potentially life-changing sentence. The charges against him remain allegations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The severity of the charges underscores the government’s commitment to cracking down on drug trafficking in the region. As the investigation continues, law enforcement agencies are warning the public about the dangers of drug-related activities and the stiff penalties awaiting those who engage in such crimes.
