Dominican National Sentenced for Illegally Reentering U.S. after Cocaine Conviction

In a harsh blow to a notorious Dominican national, Jose Ozuna Cruz, 48, was sentenced to 12 months and 1 day of imprisonment for illegally reentering the United States after being deported.

The sentencing of Ozuna comes after a long history of entanglements with U.S. law enforcement. In February 2010, Ozuna was deported from the U.S. to the Dominican Republic following a felony conviction in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California for conspiracy to distribute cocaine, to which he was sentenced to 37 months in prison.

However, Ozuna’s troubles didn’t end there. On November 21, 2022, he was arrested by Waterbury Police in Waterbury for various state drug distribution and firearm possession offenses. He has been detained since his federal arrest on November 9, 2023.

Ozuna pleaded guilty to the charge of illegal reentry on January 30, 2024, after being investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Anastasia E. King.

While the state charges against Ozuna are still pending, this sentencing serves as a stern warning to nationals who attempt to reenter the country after being deported. The U.S. government will continue to take a hard stance on reentry, a crime that poses a significant threat to national security and public safety.

Ozuna’s lengthy history of crime is a stark reminder of the consequences of a life of crime. His sentencing serves as a testament to the U.S. government’s commitment to protecting its citizens from the scourge of illegal reentry and the dangers it poses.
