MACON, Ga. – Convicted felon Dormaine Mitchell has been sentenced to serve a staggering 140 months in federal prison for his illegal possession of a firearm with an extended magazine. The 39-year-old resident of Milledgeville was found guilty at trial following a tense standoff with Baldwin County deputies in 2022.
Mitchell’s sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge C. Ashley Royal on Aug. 19, also includes three years of supervised release. His conviction followed a two-day trial where he was found guilty of one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. There is no parole in the federal system.
“Repeat offenders like Mitchell have no place in society,” said U.S. Attorney William R. “Will” Keyes. “Felons who illegally possess firearms will be federally prosecuted for breaking the law and putting others at risk.”
ATF Assistant Special Agent in Charge Beau Kolodka emphasized the dangers posed by prohibited persons with firearms, stating, “A person in possession of stolen firearms is a clear and present danger to our communities. We are grateful for the quick action of our law enforcement partners who ensured a safe outcome.”
The case began when a Baldwin County Sheriff’s deputy observed Mitchell driving erratically on Oct. 13, 2022. Mitchell was stopped for erratic driving and during an encounter with law enforcement, he was found to have an extended magazine sticking out of his vehicle. Mitchell has a lengthy criminal history including a prior aggravated assault conviction.
This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that leverages the Department of Justice’s full resources in combating illegal immigration, eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime. The ATF and Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, along with local law enforcement partners, investigated Mitchell’s case.
U.S. Attorney Will Keyes prosecuted the case for the Government.
