During the FIFA World Cup 2026 in North Texas, a massive law enforcement operation was undertaken to protect airspace security. The effort, which involved the FBI, DEA, ATF, and other agencies, was aimed at preventing unauthorized drones from flying near key locations, including Dallas Stadium and Fair Park. From June 11 to July 19, authorities seized 94 drones, with 65 taken at Dallas Stadium and 29 at Fair Park, where the Fan Fest was held.
The operation involved the establishment of Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) over the locations, with a 3 nautical mile radius up to 3,000 feet around Dallas Stadium and a 1 nautical mile up to 1,000 feet TFR at Fair Park. Counter Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) teams were also deployed to detect and intercept unauthorized drones. As a result of the seizures, various enforcement actions were taken, including fines, documentation of drone incursions, and charges against drone operators.
Luis Mauricio Flores Ordonez, a Honduran national, was charged with violating national defense airspace after flying a drone near Dallas Stadium during a match on June 14. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced. Other drone investigations are still ongoing.
The success of the operation demonstrates the effectiveness of a multi-agency approach to addressing airspace security threats. The collaboration between federal, state, and local agencies helped to ensure public safety during the high-profile event.
