Eagle Butte Man Fails to Register as Sex Offender
A 51-year-old man from Eagle Butte, South Dakota, has been sentenced for his role in failing to register as a sex offender. David Marrowbone was handed down a 15-month sentence in custody, followed by 5 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The conviction stems from Marrowbone’s failure to update his sex offender registration between February 3, 2014, and March 13, 2014, as required by federal law. This was not the first time Marrowbone had run afoul of the law – he was previously convicted in 1982 for Assault with Intent to Commit Rape.
Marrowbone was indicted by a federal grand jury on June 10, 2014, and subsequently pled guilty to the Indictment on March 26, 2015. The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller prosecuted the case, securing a tough sentence for Marrowbone. The sentence reflects the gravity of the offense and serves as a reminder to those who would fail to comply with registration requirements.
Marrowbone was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to begin serving his sentence.
The conviction and sentence were announced by Acting United States Attorney Randolph J. Seiler, who praised the efforts of law enforcement in bringing the case to a successful conclusion.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of sex offender registration and the consequences that follow failure to comply. Those who would seek to evade the law will be held accountable for their actions.
