SHERMAN, Texas – A chilling chapter in the battle against illegal immigration unfolds as David Antonio Lopez-Hernandez, a 43-year-old El Salvadoran national living clandestinely in Carrollton, faces federal charges for unlawfully returning to the United States. The grim saga was unveiled by Eastern District of Texas Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs.
Lopez-Hernandez has been formally charged with illegal reentry by a previously deported alien, according to an indictment returned this week by a federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Texas. The charges stem from his discovery on April 18, 2025, within the jurisdiction after having been expelled from the country.
This harrowing case is part of Operation Take Back America, a Department of Justice-led initiative aimed at countering illegal immigration, dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and safeguarding communities from violent crime. The operation unites resources from various task forces, including the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
Should Lopez-Hernandez be found guilty, he faces a heavy penalty of up to 2 years in federal prison, along with the prospect of deportation. The investigation into this case has been led by Homeland Security Investigations, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Stevan Buys is prosecuting the charges.
A federal indictment does not equate to guilt; all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
