RAPID CITY – The grim streets of Rapid City were hit with another heavy blow today as Dorian Lester, 29, was sentenced to two years and nine months in federal prison for his audacious defiance of the sex offender registry laws.
Lester’s conviction stems from a brazen move to evade justice after being released from custody. The U.S. Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced that U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler handed down the sentence on August 7, 2025, ensuring that Lester will serve nearly three years behind bars for his crime.
The defendant, who was previously convicted of sexual abuse of a minor, faced life on the sex offender registry after his heinous act against a 12-year-old victim. Federal law mandates that sex offenders must update their residence with the registry within three days of moving. Yet, Lester ignored this critical requirement after being released.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Schroeder was instrumental in bringing Lester to justice, prosecuting the case with vigor and seeing it through to its conclusion. The U.S. Marshals Service conducted a thorough investigation, ensuring that no stone was left unturned in their pursuit of justice for the victim.
In addition to his prison sentence, Lester will be under supervised release for five years after his release, and he must pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. The court’s decision serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences faced by those who fail to comply with sex offender registry requirements.
Lester was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing, ensuring that he will not be a threat to society for years to come. The Rapid City community can breathe a little easier knowing that justice has been served in this case.
