Derrick Howard, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Ammunition, District of Columbia 2025

Washington – Derrick Howard, 30, a repeat offender from Washington, D.C., was today handed a 21-month prison sentence for illegal possession of a .38 special revolver after his reckless ride on an unlicensed motor scooter resulted in a collision with a police cruiser, announced U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.

Howard’s guilty plea, entered on April 11, 2025, for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon, led to the court’s decision, which also mandates three years of supervised release following his prison term.

The sentencing was marked by the presence of Special Agent in Charge Anthony Spotswood of the ATF and Chief Pamela A. Smith of the MPD, emphasizing the joint effort in tackling illegal firearms on city streets.

Records indicate that on January 27, 2025, Howard flagrantly ran a red light, striking a police vehicle at New York Avenue and Bladensburg Road NE. The officer’s call for backup resulted in a detective discovering that the scooter was unregistered, and Howard lacked a motorcycle helmet or license to operate it.

Upon searching Howard, officers found a satchel containing the revolver and five rounds of ammunition. His criminal history, which includes assault with a dangerous weapon and unauthorized use of vehicles, is a testament to his disregard for the law.

This case was meticulously investigated by the MPD and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Emory V. Cole. Howard’s sentence reflects the severity of his latest transgression and the commitment to public safety.
