With the 2016 general election just days away, federal authorities in Oregon have launched a full-scale crackdown on potential election fraud, voter intimidation, and ballot tampering. U.S. Attorney Billy J. Williams has activated the Department of Justice’s Election Day Program, appointing Assistant U.S. Attorney Adrian Brown as the District Election Officer to lead the charge in Portland.
Brown will oversee all federal efforts to root out illegal interference in the Nov. 8 election, including threats, bribery, impersonation, ballot stuffing, and unauthorized ballot marking. His office will work in lockstep with the FBI’s Portland Field Office to investigate any and all reports of misconduct at polling places across the state. The mission: ensure every legal vote counts—and no fraudulent one does.
‘Discrimination, voter interference, and election fraud will not be tolerated,’ Williams warned in a sharply worded statement. ‘It is the mission of the Department of Justice to act promptly and aggressively to protect the integrity of our electoral process.’ The warning was direct—any attempt to corrupt the vote would trigger immediate federal scrutiny.
Federal law criminalizes a wide range of election abuses, from buying votes to altering tallies, intimidating voters at polling sites, or marking ballots without voter consent. Special protections guarantee that all eligible voters can cast their ballot free from coercion. Violators face steep penalties, including fines, federal prosecution, and years behind bars.
To streamline reporting, the DOJ has established multiple channels for the public to blow the whistle. Complaints can be directed to AUSA Adrian Brown at (503) 727-1000 or FBI Special Agent Caleb Williams at (503) 224-4181. Reports can also be filed with the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division in Washington, DC, by phone, fax, email (voting.section@udsoj.gov), or through an online portal (go.usa.gov/xkvn4).
The Election Day Program is part of a nationwide DOJ initiative to safeguard elections. By appointing a dedicated officer in each federal district, the department aims to deter fraud before it happens and respond swiftly when it does. In Oregon, the message is clear: the feds are watching, and they’re not backing down.
