Counterfeit Scheme Unfolds in Elkins

A brazen scheme to pass off fake cash for real has landed a 34-year-old Elkins man in hot water. Marc G. Collett, a resident of Elkins, West Virginia, has pleaded guilty to using counterfeit money to obtain authentic currency and other goods.

According to United States Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld, II, Collett conspired with other individuals to repeatedly exchange counterfeit money in Harrison County, West Virginia, in late 2014.

Collett’s scheme was designed to get him authentic United States currency, debit cards, and merchandise. However, his plan was foiled when he was caught and charged with ‘Uttering Counterfeit Obligations or Securities – Aiding and Abetting.’

As part of his plea agreement, Collett is facing up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Montoro prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. The United States Secret Service, the Clarksburg, West Virginia Police Department, and the West Virginia State Police are investigating the incident.

The case is a stark reminder of the consequences of perpetuating counterfeit schemes. Collett’s actions put the entire community at risk and undermined the integrity of the financial system.

Collett’s sentencing is yet to be determined, but one thing is certain – his actions have left a lasting impact on the community. The Grimy Times will continue to monitor the case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
