Crime: Theft of Government Funds
A shocking case of betrayal has unfolded in Elm Grove, Louisiana, where a 60-year-old woman, Rose M. Young, has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $36,000 from her deceased mother’s Worker’s Compensation benefits.
According to the evidence presented in court, after Young’s mother passed away, she continued to receive and spend her mother’s benefits without notifying the U.S. Department of Labor. The total amount swindled by Young stood at a staggering $36,716.76.
Young, a resident of Elm Grove, Louisiana, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark L. Hornsby, where she pleaded guilty to one count of theft of government funds. The plea is set to become final when accepted by U.S. District Judge Donald E. Walter.
The U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Inspector General, conducted a thorough investigation into the matter, leading to Young’s guilty plea. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert W. Gillespie Jr. is prosecuting the case.
Young faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, along with one to three years of supervised release, a $250,000 fine, and restitution. A sentencing date has been set for November 19, 2015.
