Corrupt Bahamian Official Charged with Cocaine Importation
Elvis Nathaniel Curtis, a high-ranking member of the Royal Bahamas Police Force, was arrested on Monday in Florida and charged with cocaine importation and related weapons offenses. According to the indictment, Curtis allegedly worked with drug traffickers to smuggle tons of cocaine through The Bahamas and into the U.S.
Curtis, along with 12 other defendants, was charged with conspiracy to import cocaine, cocaine importation, and weapons offenses. The charges were unsealed on Monday and include allegations that the defendants used their positions to accept bribes, protect traffickers, and facilitate drug shipments via airports and maritime routes.
The investigation, led by the DEA’s Special Operations Division, revealed that the defendants had been working together for years to smuggle cocaine through The Bahamas. The indictment alleges that the defendants used their positions to control airports and provide sensitive information about U.S. Coast Guard movements to drug traffickers.
The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Gregory H. Woods. Damian Williams, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, said that the charges should serve as a wake-up call to corrupt officials everywhere.
The indictment alleges that the defendants worked together to smuggle tons of cocaine through The Bahamas and into the U.S. The investigation is ongoing, and further charges are expected.
