Jacksonville Man Pleads Guilty to Federal Tax Charges
A 45-year-old Jacksonville man has pleaded guilty to failing to file federal tax returns or pay federal taxes for two years.
Emell Meda Meda, a resident of Duval County, Florida since at least 2008, received gross income substantially in excess of the minimum amounts legally requiring him to pay federal income taxes in 2008 and 2009.
According to the plea agreement, Meda was required to file an income tax return with the Internal Revenue Service on or before April 15, 2009, for taxable year 2008, and on or before April 15, 2010, for taxable year 2009. However, Meda willfully failed to file these returns for both calendar years.
The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation, and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark B. Devereaux.
Meda faces a maximum penalty of one year in federal prison for each count, and a sentencing date has not yet been set. He was indicted on June 26, 2013.
The guilty plea is a reminder that tax evasion is a serious crime that can have severe consequences. It is essential for individuals to comply with tax laws and regulations to avoid facing similar charges.
The Jacksonville community can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Meda will face justice for his crimes. The guilty plea serves as a warning to others who may be tempted to evade taxes, and highlights the importance of accountability and transparency in our tax system.
