MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – A man from El Salvador is facing serious prison time after allegedly reentering the United States following a prior conviction for a violent crime.
Emerson Corvera, a citizen of El Salvador, was indicted this week on one count of “Reentry of Removed Alien Previously Convicted of an Aggravated Felony.”
• The indictment alleges that Corvera was in Berkeley County, West Virginia, illegally in April 2022.
Corvera was previously convicted in June 2016 in the Northern District of Florida for transporting women for prostitution. The indictment alleged that at least 26 women were sold “by the session” as a part of the conspiracy.
Corvera was removed from the United States by ICE after that conviction.
If convicted, Corvera faces up to 20 years of incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Eleanor F. Hurney is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office investigated.
An indictment is merely an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
